Hormone Balance

£139Test + consultation, results in a few days

A simple at-home finger-prick (capillary) blood test that looks at female hormone balance. Because reproductive hormones in this panel vary across the menstrual cycle, we ask you to record your cycle day when you take the test, so your results can be interpreted using the correct cycle-stage context.

WHAT THIS TEST LOOKS AT

Reproductive hormone patterns and androgen balance.

This capillary biomarker profile is designed to provide information on reproductive hormone patterns and androgen balance. LH and FSH give context on gonadotrophin patterns, while testosterone, SHBG and calculated Free Androgen Index (FAI) give context on biochemical androgen status where clinically relevant. Derived ratios such as LH:FSH and FAI should be interpreted cautiously and in the wider clinical context, not in isolation.

Cycle timing matters

Reproductive hormones in this panel vary across the menstrual cycle. You can take the sample on any convenient day, as long as your cycle day is recorded at collection (Day 1 = first day of full menstrual bleeding). Your results are interpreted using the reference interval or cycle-stage context relevant to your sampling day — for example follicular, mid-cycle or luteal — or using postmenopausal reference intervals where relevant.

If you're specifically checking baseline gonadotrophins, sampling is ideally in the early follicular phase (cycle days 2–5, usually during your period). Testing outside this window may be less directly comparable to baseline expectations, and repeat testing may be recommended depending on your results and symptoms.

This test can provide useful hormone information, but it does not by itself diagnose or exclude PCOS, infertility or other endocrine conditions.

THE BIOMARKERS

What each result tells you.

Luteinising Hormone (LH)+

LH plays an important role in regulating menstrual periods and fertility — it stimulates ovulation, the release of the egg from the ovary. It's used to evaluate fertility, and to help diagnose and treat conditions related to the menstrual cycle, ovulation and menopause. The significance of your result depends on the time in your menstrual cycle when the test was taken. If your result shows as "incalculable" or "uninterpretable," it's because it needs to be read alongside a clinician who knows your medical history and cycle timing.

Pretest counselling

It's best to take this test on day 3 of your menstrual cycle, when LH levels are usually highest. If your periods are irregular, the test can be taken at any time — just note the date so it can be discussed alongside your results. Let your clinician know if you're taking any medication that may affect your hormones.

Your result is reviewed and explained as part of your consultation.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)+

FSH plays an important role in regulating menstrual periods and fertility — it stimulates the growth of egg follicles in the ovaries. It's used to evaluate fertility and to help diagnose conditions related to the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The significance of your result depends on the time in your menstrual cycle when the test was taken. If your result shows as "incalculable" or "uninterpretable," it's because it needs to be read alongside a clinician who knows your medical history and cycle timing.

Testosterone+

Testosterone is primarily produced by the ovaries in women. It plays a role in muscle mass, strength and bone density. Total testosterone is tested to help build a picture of androgen status, including where PCOS is a possibility.

Pretest counselling

Speak to a doctor before taking this test if you're on medication, particularly biotin supplements, anticonvulsants, anabolic steroids or hormonal therapy, or if you handle hormone-containing products.

Your result is reviewed and explained as part of your consultation.

SHBG+

SHBG is a protein that binds to testosterone and oestrogen in the body, helping regulate how much of these hormones is active. It's used to help diagnose certain conditions and to monitor hormone therapy.

Your result is reviewed and explained as part of your consultation.

Free Androgen Index (FAI)+

FAI estimates the amount of free, active testosterone available for the body to use — calculated by dividing total testosterone by SHBG. In women, it's typically calculated where there are symptoms of androgen excess, such as acne, hirsutism or irregular cycles.

Your result is reviewed and explained as part of your consultation.

When to seek medical advice directly

If you have symptoms such as unexpected weight loss, severe pelvic pain, heavy or abnormal bleeding, or anything feels urgent, seek medical advice promptly — do not wait for your test results.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is this test right for me?+

It's suited to anyone wanting to understand their hormone balance — whether that's due to irregular cycles, symptoms of androgen excess, fertility questions, or simply wanting a baseline. It isn't a substitute for urgent medical care.

Does when I test in my cycle matter?+

You can test on any convenient day, as long as you record your cycle day at collection — your results are interpreted using the reference range for that stage of your cycle. If you're specifically checking baseline fertility hormones, early follicular phase (days 2–5) is preferred.

What happens in the consultation?+

A member of our clinical team reviews and explains your results in plain language, in the context of your cycle timing, symptoms and medical history, and talks through any next steps.

Will this diagnose PCOS or infertility?+

No — this test can provide useful hormone information, but it does not by itself diagnose or exclude PCOS, infertility or other endocrine conditions.
