This capillary biomarker profile provides a focused overview of testosterone status and androgen availability. Total testosterone measures the overall amount of testosterone in the blood. SHBG and albumin bind testosterone in circulation and help provide context on the proportion that's more biologically available. Free testosterone and the Free Androgen Index (testosterone:SHBG ratio) provide additional context where SHBG may influence interpretation.
Testosterone can vary with time of day, recent illness, medicines, sleep, weight change and sample timing, so results should be interpreted alongside symptoms, medicines/supplements, medical history and clinical context. If testosterone is low or borderline, repeat appropriately-timed testing and clinician review may be needed — additional markers such as LH, FSH and prolactin may be recommended to help assess the cause.

Total Testosterone+
Testosterone is a hormone primarily produced by the testicles in men. It plays a role in the development of male sex organs, muscle mass, strength and bone density. Total testosterone is tested to help build a picture of androgen status, and to monitor treatments such as testosterone replacement therapy.

Free Testosterone+
Free testosterone is the biologically active form of testosterone — not bound to proteins in the blood — and can enter cells to exert its effects. It's essential for developing masculine characteristics, maintaining bone density and regulating libido.

SHBG+
SHBG is a protein that binds to testosterone and oestrogen in the body, helping regulate how much of these hormones is active. It's used to help diagnose certain conditions and to monitor hormone therapy.

Albumin+
Albumin is a protein produced by the liver that plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance in the body, transporting hormones, and supporting the immune system.
Not typically recommended as a routine screening test on its own, but may be relevant if you have symptoms such as swelling, fatigue or difficulty healing wounds, or risk factors such as liver or kidney disease, malnutrition, or chronic infection or inflammation.

Free Androgen Index (FAI)+
FAI estimates the amount of free, active testosterone available for the body to use — calculated by dividing total testosterone by SHBG. In men, this helps build a picture of testosterone levels to help guide treatment plans, such as testosterone replacement therapy.
